This is a trip I have always wanted to make. I can remember traveling on parts of Route 66 when I was small on our way to visit relatives. I have tried to piece together the old highway from books but have been unable to do so. Our prayers and thoughts will be with you. Thanks for this great website. Janet Mackey, Canton, GA

Thanks Janet.  Pack up and go with us this year, it will be great fun and raising money to find a CURE just makes you feel good.  Remember you can be a sponsor even if you can't make the ride.  Pick the Sponsorship you feel good about and send a check.  Of course the prayers are always needed.
God Bless,

Hi Roger, I enjoyed our conversation this afternoon. I live a mile from your destination out old Rte 66 so if I make the trip with the group, I guess I'm gonna have to ride from Venice, CA to Chicago to have break- fast with you guys on Sept. lst before the ride starts. But I am really excited not only about the group ride down old Route 66, but also..my wife passed away in 1999 from ovarian cancer so I feel the same as you and your wife about nailing a CURE for all types of cancer.  John Matthews
John stay excited, because we are planning on you being with us all the way, it is going to be a fun ride and another step toward finding a CURE for cancer.  Our team raised $7500 last year for the Relay and have our goal for next year set at $15,000 and John we are excited that you are going to help.  Let me know if you need anything from me.  Rodger

I am so sorry about your wife.  It just seams that everyone is touched by this awful disease.  Now that I know who you are, I see no reason why you couldn't ride part of the trip.  Leave out of Springfield, IL with us on September 2nd and ride for a few miles, be a sponsor and help us find a CURE.  Rodger

Rodger, Just read the artical in Wing World and love it. My wife "Doris" has a 1988 Yamaha Route 66 and we have pictures of it in front of the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari NM. Some day we will ride the whole route. We live in Kansas and ride a 2003 1800.Jack & Doris Schoeck Emporia Ks.

Jack & Doris thanks for the message, I would like to have a picture of the 1988 Yamaha Route 66 in front of the Blue Swallow.  The people running the Blue Swallow would love a copy and I will take it to them, no don't send it, bring it and join me for part of the ride.  Emporia is not that far away, I use to live in Hillsboro, Route 66 is just a hop, skip and jump away.  Thanks.   Rodger

Rodger, Ed Tokarz checking in. I'll be riding with you from Chicago to LA. Also my friend since we were 5 years old will be riding with us. Some questions: 1. I'll need directions to the departure point in Chicago as my friend and I will be arriving Fri PM from PA coming in on I-80. Also what Hotel arrangements, if any, for Fri night. Is there room where you're staying or do I need to find my own? 2. I have someone asking about sponsoring me for a penny a mile. How are you handling this? 3. Are we riding on any of the actual remaining sections of Route 66 where it exists? Or just along side on the Interstate? And someone saying "It's over there!" I've filled out the application form and will mail tomorrow with the rider sponsor fee enclosed. Looking forward to meeting you Fri PM Aug 31st. Ride safe. Ed Tokarz Fredericksburg, VA

Ed this becoming fun now.  #1 - We will all meet between 8:30am & 9am at the Navy Pier in Chicago.  Look at the  Trip Schedule Map the Trip 2007 for the motel I will be staying at in Chicago (actually Downers Grove, Illinois).  Just call the motel I have listed for a room.  #2 - Being sponsored a penny per mile is a really good way to collect donations.  Just tell them how many miles you are going to ride, have them to make out a check to "Ride for the Relay" or American Cancer Society and mail it to me or bring it to Chicago.  #3 - We will be riding every inch of Old Route 66 that we can find.  We normally only run the Interstate when it is running over the top of Old 66.  Please study the web site, call and reserve your rooms along the way.  Also please call me, anytime at 217-473-1525 so we can talk.  Rodger

Rodger, Thanks for the response. Doug English, Mansfield, PA (he's sending in his rider sponsor fee also) and I will be staying at the Red Roof just down the street from the Doubletree. When I called the Doubletree, they claimed "no knowledge" of any "Ride for the relay" group and said they didn't know anything about the "special rate". So I just called the Red Roof and got a good rate. I also called all the other hotels you listed and made reservations. Kathy from Candlewood Suites called me last night at home and wanted your email. She would like to thank you for recommending the Candlewood to everyone. Also what's the latest on the "Wigwam" motel? I held off on making a reservation there until I hear from you. Doug and I will look you up Fri evening Aug 31st in Downers Grove at the Doubletree. We should arrive at the Red Roof by 6 PM (hopefully sooner), check in and then ride over to the Doubletree. Looking forward to meeting you. Ride safe. Ed Tokarz Dave Jones from Racine, thanks for the info. How far are you planning on going? I'll see you in Chicago on the 1st of Sept. Ride safe. Ed

Sorry you had a little problem with the Doubletree but I only made arrangements for me because it is the day before the trip.  I was only making motel arrangements for the day we travel Route 66.  I am still working on the Wigwam and will try my best to have something posted before today is over.  I have two or three people coming with me to Chicago and we should be at the Doubletree by 6pm.  Also there is a couple nights at the end of the trip that I don have motels for as of this morning.  San Bernardino and Santa Monica are really hard trying to find someone that will work with us and give us a rate, but I will get it done.  You as the question:  "How far are you planning on going?", I am going to Santa Monica if that is what you were asking.  See you in Chicago.  I am excited.   Rodger

Hello Rodger. It was really good talking with you on the CB a few weeks ago. We run across I-72 and talked for several miles. My CB handle is Wine-O and I live at New London MO. I was telling my wife about your website and we decided to check it out. What you and all the other people out there are doing to help raise money for a CURE is GREAT. This dreadful disease has touched very close to home. My father-in-law has had a few boughts and is currently doing well. Do you know when you might be coming through the St. Louis area? We would like to come down and visit with all of you. Keep in touch. Thanks for putting yourself out there to help so many people across the US. Maybe we can make it down to St. Louis. Have a great ride and be safe! Steve & Denise Lehenbauer ~ New London MO

Great to hear from you Steve.  If you will click right here on Trip Schedule, Map the Trip 2007 you can see when we will be going into St Louis.  We don't have any planned stops in St Louis so you could come to Springfield, Illinois on Saturday night September 1, spend the night and leave out with us the next morning.  The TV station will be there, it will be a fun time.  Follow us down to St Louis or maybe all the way to Rolla.  Let me know your plan.  Steve you can call me at 217-473-1525 anytime.   Rodger

Hi Rodger and the gang. This is Laura. I got home last evening and Stan is heading back to Detroit this afternoon. It was great meeting all of you. We had a great time and can't wait to do it again next year. I see you're now calling yourselves the "all the way crew" seems I've heard that somewhere before. I may not have been able to go all the way this time .. but .. well, you know the rest...... Miss you all, have a great trip and keep in touch. ~ Laura

Rodger- It's a great thing you're doing out there. Keep up the good work and stay safe. Oh, and don't get lost again. Or get the cops involved again. Ha ha. Just teasing. I admire you for all the work you and Sue put into such a worthy cause. We all have lost someone to the big "C". But maybe in trying to keep others from the same fate we can keep the memory of our loved ones closer. By the way, I've never seen John Ford with so much HARE! Thanks for the laugh. Good luck and have fun. Mindy

Great to hear from you, I had no idea that you even paid attention to what I was doing.  I think John was very very cute on the Rabbit!   Rodger

Hey gang, I'm back in Detroit, and back to work. Hope all is well with you folks. I just want to say what a pleasure it was to meet all of you, and how hard it was to turn right when you all turned left. I mean that, not only Rodger and Sue, but Norm, Alice, Ed, Dave, John and of course Doug, you folks are the best. I can't wait til next year. If any of you are in the Detroit area for any reason, drop me a note, maybe I can buy you dinner. Stan hoffs@twmi.rr.com

Stan next year is going to be unbelievable.  I am totally blown away with all the response.  I want your name at the top of the list.  Thanks for the time you gave to the Ride and for your sponsorship and Laura.  She added a special touch for all us that go "All the way".    Rodger

Rodger; Karen and I have lost some very special people to Cancer over the past years. We applaud you with all of our heart for what you are doing to support cancer research. None of know when the dollar will be the dollar to find the cure. Until then, we just keep plugging away and praying that our scientist and Doctors can come up with the answers. Until then, persons like yourself venture on to raise not only money for the cure, but awareness of the need for the cure. Our company check will b e delivered to the shop in Jacksonville. Ride safe and may God bless each of you Larry Richie

Just read the note from our granddaughter, she is such a sweet girl, and loves her g'pa very much. Knowledge way beyond her 11 years. Hopefully I will be joining all of you on the ride next year. Love the pictures, some are a real hoot! You have a real crew there. Have fun and ride safe. Take care and God Bless, Ann Tokarz

Hi Rodger, What a wonderful job you have done getting this ride for the cure together. It is certainly for a great cause. I have lost 4 of my close family members to cancer. It is definately people like you that will help make a difference for someone else. I am sure you do have your job cut out for you as a couple of guys on this trip can be TROUBLE."Rather not mention names" I can tell by the look on the face of the guy who owns the "YELLOW THING", that he was forced into something he really didn't want to do when he was made to let those adoring fans sit on his trike. GOD willing,I will be able to be there for him next year and keep him free of those sticky situations.(LOL)Have a safe and wonderful trip ALL. May God ride with you..Judy English Doug or Ed might know who I am

Judy, I am so sorry about the family members you lost.  Thank you for saying it takes people like me, and I am riding with a whole group of people like me.  I had the idea, it is all of you that make it happen, God Bless.  Now for the serious stuff, I am sorry it took me so long to answer but watching over the two mentioned takes most of my free time.  Right now we are in Barstow, California (Sept 10).  The last couple days I have had my hands full taking care of these guys, selling pins and making sure they have a proper supply of ear plugs at night.  It is like a day care on the move.  I am looking forward to have you, Ed's wife and my wife on the trip next year.  Maybe it will take a little pressure off me.  Later dear   Rodger

Hi guys! So far it looks like you're having tons of fun and doing a wonderful job of raising awareness and funds for a terrific cause. The pictures and the commentary of the trip to date have been awesome, and judging by the pictures of Doug and the yellow thing we're not exactly sure which one is the chick magnet. Keep up the good work, and we look forward to following the rest of your journey. Chad and Michelle

Thanks guys, we are having a very good time, but we are also getting the word out and making people aware of what we are doing.  As of today (September 10) we have sold over a $1000 worth of pins already.  And we know who is the chick magnet.  Not Doug  -  Not the Yellow Thing --Hello - Rodger

Good morning Rodger & Switch, I made it home last night at 8:30. The temperature was 52 degrees! Quite a change from the 114 in the desert! I slept like a rock after being on the road for 18 days, getting up at 5:30 am and riding til midnight for the last 3 days! We rode a total of 2,757 miles from Corona, CA to Fredericksburg, VA in 4 days! That's an average of 689.25 miles a day and about 14-15 hours a day! My total miles for the entire trip was 6,362. It was one terrific experience and I'm looking forward, first of all to the banquet in Feb and then the ride again on 6 Sep 08! Let me know when you get home Rodger. See ya in Feb! Ed

Ed so glad you made it home safe and sound.  689.25 miles a day is a little over the top but I knew you could do it, I am just glad I don't have to do that.  I can hardly wait till Feb.  It will be good to see everyone again.  I am at GWRRA  Headquarters today and tomorrow.  Things are looking good for June 2008 issue with the "All the way Gang" on the cover.  Keep your fingers crossed that it happens.   Rodger

Rodger, I didn't realize you and your wife both survived cancer. I lost my Dad in 1988 from colon cancer and then had go through everything again in the Spring of 1989 with my husband. He has been cancer free ever since, thanks to regularly scheduled screenings. Right now our prayers include Gregg Sparrow of Jacksonville who is undergoing therapy. Marian

Thanks Marian we will put Gregg on our prayer list.   Rodger

Hi Rodger! I sure enjoyed meeting you and the "All the way group" when you stopped it Joplin, MO. I don't remember ever going on Old 66 into Galena, KS and I live right next door. Quite a view from there. We passed the Green Parrot Lounge on Main Street (Rt. 66) of Galena. A local spot that was kind of famous. It was torn down last week due to a sink hole under the building. Thanks to Sue for shareing you with all of us along the way. And thanks for all the good work you guys are doing for cancer. I have been blessed to not have it but family members do. Looking forward to seeing you next year and perhaps meeting your Sue. Sue Pequignot MO=X aka 66 Wings

Hello Sue and it was my pleasure meeting you and we will see you next year.  Be sure to check the web site about once a week to see what is going on.  Everyone said to tell you hello.  My Sue hopes to be with me next year, so you two will get to meet.  Take care of yourself, we will talk soon.   Rodger

Roger I think this is the greatest! Please put me on your list. I will be glad to help in any way I can. I lost my sister to cancer in 1996. My husband has lost several family members already and two of his sisters are putting up a good fight now. Thanks for your help with our benefit and you and your riders will be in our prayers. Roma

Roma, thank you for all you do at Pinetree.  We will be looking forward to having you as a sponsor next year.  Keep watching our web site for updates.  February 10, 2008 is our Relay for Life Banquet that Sue and I put on.  It is a Prime Rib dinner with all the trimmings, music for TNT and the Dynamite Cowboys and an Auction.  I hope we see you there.  More information will be posted in the near future.  God Bless.   Rodger

Enjoyed reading information on Route 66 as traveled this highway when younger. Would like to do bike ride someday. Kudos to all who are able. Think this is wonderful idea. SL

I am glad you enjoyed all the Route 66 information and would love to have you join us.  You know that is bike isn't necessary.  You can drive a car, truck anything that would be legal on the road.  We would love to have you be a part in some way.  Remember being a sponsor doesn't mean you have to make the trip, it means you care about finding a CURE, so at least become a sponsor and let us know exactly who you are.   Rodger
