Route 66 Texas metal signRoute 66 New Mexico metal signSeptember 13, 2006  9am Leaving Amarillo, Texas  Sorry for no posting for today I will try to catch up tonight.

Things have been a little hurried.  I will let the pictures tell most of the story.

We left Amarillo in good time heading for Albuquerque, NM

A few miles west of Amarillo is the Cadillac Ranch.  This is the strangest thing I ever seen.  Some nut buried 10 Cadillac's in the dirt and people come from all over the world to paint on them.  We were there for maybe 10 minutes.  Before we left a bus, two vans and a car showed up.  I would guest there were 75 people there when we left.

When riding route 66 there are several area's where you must run on the Interstate.  Somewhere east of Tucumcari we were on the interstate and seen a route 66 sign, so we turn off the I-40 on to 66.  Well it was a 3/4 mile long and just turned into gravel.  So we turned around, headed back to I-40 but stopped and took these pictures.  NOTE:  Check the saddle on the horse, it is on backwards.

Tucumcari, NM is a must if you are traveling route 66.  Just look at the pictures.

New Mexico Sky.  It looked this way all day.

The sad part of the day.  We were just a couple miles from getting off the interstate and getting back on route 66 and there was a wreck.  The interstate was closed both directions for 4 hours.  The worst traffic backup I ever seen.  According to the news this morning no one died.

Because of the wreck we were five hours late getting into Albuquerque and that made us late for dinner with Bobby Uncer and his friend Bob O'Neal.  But once we hooked up with them, we had a good time.  There will be more about Bobby Uncer tomorrow.
