September 9, 2006  9am Leaving Chicago.  I left Navy Pier at 9am, went south to Jackson Street and picked up Old Route 66.  From that point on it was smooth sailing, I just followed the signs.  I hope all the states have Route 66 marked as well as Illinois.  The weather was great all day, but I do believe if I had stayed in Chicago another hour I would have got wet.  If you look at the pictures below you will see that I had a wonderful time looking at everything and of course Route 66 goes down the middle of every little town and that really makes the trip enjoyable.  This is one ride that I am not going to hurry from point A to point  B.  It took me 8 hours to go 200 miles today.  Chicago was not as bad as I thought it would be but it was never convenient to stop and take any pictures.  Now for the pictures.

Leaving Chicago I only had to ride about 6 miles on Interstate.  There was another short stretch of about 3 miles of then all the rest was Old Route 66.

This is a cool restaurant in the south part of Chicago.

Being a Veteran, I feel strongly about our military and the many troops we have lost for our freedom.  I almost feel it is my duty to stop when I pass a National Cemetery.  Then when you see a lady praying over a grave that she has been setting at for probably hours it does bring a tear to your eye and a prayer to you heart.  Please don't forget our Vets.

Here are a few sites between Chicago and Odell, Illinois

This is an old 1932 service station in Odell.  It brought back some good memories.

This was an original stretch of Old Route 66.  In some areas they are using the old 66 as bicycle paths.

Below is more sites along the way.

The Route 66 Motel, Springfield, Illinois.  New friends and old friends.

The day was topped off with a prime rib dinner at the Crown Plaza Hotel with my wife,  Bob & Cathy Zipprich (best friends) and a buddy Larry Ritchie.  I hope you enjoyed my first day, I know I did.
